Algorithms and Adolescence

Cristina PatoI had doubts about whether I wanted to watch it or not: on the one hand, I knew that, because of the way it treats its subject matter, I should watch it; on the other hand, I was afraid of facing the harsh reality of today’s teenagers. I finally decided to watch “Adolescence”, the Netflix series created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, and directed by Philip Barantini, about a thirteen-year-old boy suspected of murdering a classmate, and about the role of social media in their lives. My doubts came mainly from the fear of realizing that I truly am ignorant about the digital lives of the new generations, and from the helplessness one feels in the face of the lack of regulation regarding minors’ access to social media and radical content.

But also, what are our options—those of us who are adults dealing with other adults? Because this is a harm that affects us all, at different levels, but all the same. We only have to look around us, or turn to national and international politics, to understand the impact algorithms have on our lives. And who is responsible? The very same companies that, despite being fully aware of the damage they are causing to the present and future of an entire generation, will never be held accountable for it.
