“Memory: An Interdisciplinary Exploration” – University of California Santa Barbara

August 7, 2017 - September 16, 2017

Professors Ken Kosik (Neuroscience) and Kim Yasuda (Arts) join visiting artist Cristina Pato (of the Grammy-winning Silk Road Ensemble) to introduce students to the cross-disciplinary field of memory studies and demonstrate how different disciplines approach common questions. Its approach is motivated by the Galician bagpiper and course instructor, Cristina Pato, and the musical composition and story that her mother’s dementia inspired. We will investigate issues ranging from the neuroscience of memory to the ways in which the arts, architecture, and literature express cultural memory, as well as the roles the arts may play in treating memory loss conditions.

The course is supported by the generosity of John and Jody Arnhold.
